What is Medical Massage?

Medical massage is a targeted, therapeutic approach designed to address specific injuries, chronic pain conditions, and post-trauma recovery. Unlike relaxation massage, medical massage is a prescription-based service that works directly with insurance providers, case managers, and healthcare professionals to support rehabilitation from auto accidents, surgery, or repetitive strain injuries. Learn more about medical massage and its benefits.

Who Can Benefit from Medical Massage?

Medical massage may be beneficial for individuals experiencing:

  • Auto accident injuries (whiplash, soft tissue trauma, muscular tension)

  • Chronic pain conditions (fibromyalgia, TMJ disorder, migraines)

  • Post-surgical recovery (scar tissue release, improved mobility)

  • Repetitive strain injuries (carpal tunnel, tennis elbow)

  • Lower back, neck, and shoulder pain from poor posture or injury

How Medical Massage Works in My Practice

I integrate myofascial release, deep tissue techniques, and neuromuscular therapy to help restore mobility and ease pain. Sessions are tailored to your needs, whether focusing on a specific injury or addressing compensation patterns caused by past trauma.

This approach differs from general massage in that it:

  • Is performed with a prescription and billed to insurance

  • Targets pain patterns and compensation issues

  • Uses goal-oriented techniques rather than full-body relaxation

  • Involves a personalized session plan based on client history and medical referrals

Pricing & Insurance Billing

Medical massage sessions are priced higher than standard sessions ($150 per hour) due to the additional administrative work involved in insurance billing, documentation, and claim processing. Unlike standard massage sessions, medical massage requires:

  • Verification of benefits and claim submission through insurance providers.

  • Detailed treatment documentation for medical necessity.

  • Coordination with doctors and case managers to ensure appropriate care.

Additionally, insurance coverage can vary. Clients are responsible for any portion of the service not covered by insurance. If a claim is denied, the client may be billed directly for the full session cost.

What to Expect in a Session

  • Client Intake & Assessment: Before your session, we’ll review your doctor’s prescription and medical history to ensure treatment aligns with your rehabilitation plan.

  • Insurance & Billing: Medical massage is billed directly to your insurance when covered by your provider. If you are receiving treatment due to an auto accident or worker’s compensation case, we can process claims accordingly.

  • Treatment Plan: Techniques will be chosen based on your body’s needs, with a focus on long-term improvement, not just symptom relief.

Referrals & Insurance Considerations

To qualify for medical massage billing, you will need a prescription from a doctor, chiropractor, or healthcare provider that includes:

  • Patient Name & Date of Birth

  • Diagnosis Code (ICD-10 Code) – Required for insurance billing

  • Recommended Treatment – Specifically stating Medical Massage Therapy

  • Treatment Frequency & Duration – Example: 1 session per week for 6 weeks

  • Physician’s Name, NPI Number, and Signature

  • Date of Prescription – Typically valid for a set period

I handle insurance claims submission using HCFA forms and can work with case managers for auto accident and rehabilitation cases. Please check with your insurance provider regarding coverage details.

Missed Appointments & Cancellation Policy

Insurance does not cover missed appointments. Cancellations with less than 24 hours' notice or no-shows will be subject to a cancellation fee ($50), payable by the client. This ensures availability for other clients who need care and helps prevent disruptions in scheduling.
