What is Myofascial Release Therapy?

Myofascial release (MFR) is a hands-on technique designed to relieve tension in the fascia, the connective tissue that surrounds and supports muscles, bones, and organs. Learn more about fascia here. Restrictions in the fascia can contribute to pain, limited mobility, and postural imbalances. By applying sustained pressure and slow, deliberate movements, myofascial release helps restore movement and ease discomfort.

How Myofascial Release Works

Unlike traditional massage, myofascial release focuses on engaging the fascial system directly rather than simply working the muscles. Fascia can become restricted due to injury, habitual posture, or stress, leading to discomfort and inefficient movement patterns. Through precise pressure and stretching, MFR helps release these restrictions, allowing for greater ease and function in the body.

My Approach to Myofascial Release

Myofascial release is a specialized technique aimed at reducing tension and restoring functional movement by working directly with the body's fascial system. Myofascial release is highly effective on its own but is also a key component of Rolfing®, which focuses on whole-body structural integration. If you're interested in a broader approach, Rolfing may be worth exploring as well. Learn more about the differences between Rolfing and Myofascial Release here. In my practice, myofascial release is an integral part of the work I do. I offer myofascial release as a standalone service, in addition to incorporating it into Rolfing sessions when appropriate. Rather than following a formulaic approach, I tailor the application of MFR techniques to each client’s specific needs. Whether you are seeking relief from chronic pain, recovering from an injury, or looking to improve movement efficiency, myofascial release can be an effective tool in your bodywork experience.

What to Expect

A myofascial release session may involve slow, deep pressure, gentle stretching, and sustained holds to release fascial restrictions. Unlike some forms of deep tissue work, MFR can be strong but is always adjusted based on the desired changes and comfort level. Pressure is applied with precision and without excessive force, ensuring effective engagement with fascial restrictions. Sessions do not require direct skin contact, and no oils or lotions are used.
